The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
