One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to make up for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
