European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
