Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
